Alstom Wins €1.2 Billion UK Train Contracts as Battery-Electric Rail Moves Into the Mainstream

Battery-electric trains are moving from demonstration projects into large-scale British procurement. Alstom has signed contracts worth more than €1.2 billion to supply and maintain 29 trains for TransPennine Express, with the rolling-stock order accounting for about €930 million.

The trains form part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade and are scheduled to begin entering service from 2032. They are designed to operate across a network where full electrification is incomplete, using batteries to bridge non-electrified sections.

Battery trains can reduce the cost of decarbonising awkward routes

Full overhead electrification remains the most efficient solution for heavily used rail corridors, but it can be expensive and slow where bridges, tunnels and stations require extensive modification. Battery-electric rolling stock offers an alternative for shorter gaps between electrified sections.

That makes the TransPennine order an infrastructure test as much as a rolling-stock purchase. The economics will depend on battery life, charging strategy, energy efficiency and whether the technology avoids enough civil-engineering work to justify the added complexity on the train itself.

Our view: Derby gains another anchor order

British Business Review's view is that the industrial impact matters alongside the transport case. Alstom says the programme will create more than 350 jobs in Derby and support around 5,500 positions through the UK supply chain.

The next checkpoints are detailed manufacturing schedules, domestic supplier participation and the operational performance of the battery system. If the technology works at scale, similar procurement could follow on other partially electrified routes.
