National GDP is a poor description of the environment facing a company in Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh or Bristol. Industry mix, wages, housing, transport, exports and investment vary sharply across the UK.

This page is BBR's permanent regional-economic map. It connects national macro coverage with city and industry stories while keeping the underlying geography explicit.

London and the South East dominate high-value services

London is unusually concentrated in finance, professional services, technology, media and headquarters activity. The wider South East adds major life-science, technology and services clusters.

High output per worker does not mean every household experiences high disposable income, because housing and commuting costs are also unusually high.

The Midlands and North remain industrially important

The West Midlands has deep automotive and advanced-manufacturing activity. The North West combines manufacturing, chemicals, life sciences, digital business and professional services, while Yorkshire and the Humber retain strong manufacturing, logistics and food production.

Regional industrial investment can therefore matter more to these economies than a national services indicator suggests.

Scotland, Wales and the South West have distinct specialisms

Scotland combines financial services, energy, universities, tourism and technology. Wales has important advanced-manufacturing, semiconductor and energy assets, while the South West includes aerospace, defence, technology and creative industries.

BBR will use ONS regional statistics and company-level evidence to build out these regional clusters without presenting city data as if it described an entire nation or region.
